In a recent article in the International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants (2013; 28: 1201-1206), oral surgeons from Turkey described a new drill for exposing the sinus membrane for dental bone grafting. By using this new trephine drill, the complication of tearing the sinus membrane was reduced by 25% and it allowed for the surgery to be completed faster. However, this technique was not safer than using a piezoelectric (ultrasonic) device but faster.
The other option is to not do the sinus lift dental bone grafting but do zygomatic dental implants which have a similar success rate as standard dental implants.
The patients of Houston, Katy, Memorial, Sugar Land, Cypress, and Richmond/Rosenberg have a great deal of decisions to make about dental implants. The office of John Freeman MD, DDS, FACS works hard to keep patients informed about their dental implant needs.
